Digital declutter: It's not just your home that needs a spring clean

The clocks have changed and we're now enjoying longer daylight hours and this week we've been blessed with some beautiful British sunny weather. Long may it continue!

I dont know about you though, but the sunlight sheds light on some less-than-pretty parts of my home (thank you Cooper! 🐾🐾) and the familiar urge to spring-clean awakens.

The doors and windows are open, Furniture is pulled out, and a there's a deeeeeep clean of all the muddy dog paws and splatters everywhere 🙈. It feels so good to have it all clean and clear, and to have the light shining in is so energising!  While we’re busy dusting shelves and decluttering drawers though, there’s another space quietly clogging up behind the scenes:

Our online world.

I'll be honest, I started this blog after realising than my email inbox had reached 2000 unread messages (again!), but as I continued writing, its apparent that the declutter needs to extend far further.

From having multiple email addresses, unorganised inboxes, chaotic desktops to relentless notifications and disorganised cloud storage, the digital clutter builds up in the background—draining our focus, time, and even our energy. Just like your home, your digital life needs a good reset.

So here's what i'll be doing to clear and reorganise my digital space over the coming weeks:

1) Clear Out the Inbox Fog - Let’s start with the digital equivalent of the junk drawer: your inbox.
  • Unsubscribe from newsletters, sales promos, and mailing lists you never open. Using tools like Unroll.Me can speed this up but I also add a 'rule' to my email that anything with set keywords goes straight into a folder. That way I can clear out more easily on an ongoing basis.
  • Create folders or labels to sort emails—client work, personal, finance, kids stuff, receipts etc.
  • Archive or delete old conversations you no longer need.
  • Set email boundaries: You don’t have to live in your inbox. Try checking it just twice a day.

A clear inbox = a clear mind

2. Tidy Up your Social media it can also be an endless loop of noise and comparison if we let it spiral.
  • Unfollow or mute accounts that drain you, clutter your feed, or no longer align with your values.
  • Turn off non-essential notifications to protect your focus.
  • Batch schedule your own posts using a planning tool so you can step back while still showing up.
  • Revisit your bio and links—are they current? Do they clearly reflect what you offer?

Think of this like pruning a plant. Trim the excess so the right things can grow.

3. Organise Files & Cloud Storage. If your desktop looks like a digital snowstorm of random files, you’re not alone.
  • Create a simple folder structure for documents, photos, and projects.
  • Delete or archive anything you no longer need.
  • Rename files clearly so future you can actually find what you’re looking for (this has my name writen all over it! 🙈)
  • Back up key documents to a cloud system or external hard drive.

Tackling this can be oddly satisfying—like sorting out the airing cupboard.

4. Freshen Up Passwords & Logins - This is also a chance to think about security.
  • Use a password manager to store and organise your logins.
  • Update weak passwords or duplicates.
  • Enable two-factor authentication for your most important accounts.
  • Delete old accounts you don’t use anymore.

It’s not glamorous, but it gives peace of mind—like locking the doors at night.

5. Reclaim Your Focus & Time. Your mind deserves space, too.
  • Clear your phone screen of apps you never use.
  • Set screen time limits or create tech-free pockets in your day.
  • Unsubscribe from podcasts, YouTube channels, or newsletters that no longer serve you.
  • Use tools to save articles and avoid tab overload (this is a new oneon me but I've seen Notion and Pocket reccommended) .

Final Thought Spring cleaning isn’t just about clearing up dirt — it’s about creating space to feel lighter, clearer, and more in control. We can't see our online clutter in the way we do our physical space but it can eat away at you knowing its all there in the background. It can even feel like a dirty secret waiting to be found!!

Your digital world has many moving parts, it wont ever be 'done' but regular declutters will give you breathing room.

Good luck!
